The North Oxfordshire Green Party has taken note of the concerns raised by the Save Bicester Group. Below, Robert Nixon, Vice Chair and Bicester resident, responds to the questions raised at this page and in doing so hopes that residents will realize that the Green Party can provide a real alternative to the policies of the incumbent district councillors. Bicester is currently undergoing the building of new developments including housing. Additional housing is something the Greens campaign for to address the national housing crisis. However new local housing developments are often built in the interests of those that can afford expensive luxury homes and not local people, particularly the young, who want to live close to where they have lived all their lives. New developments in Bicester increasingly make you feel that the town is being formed, not in the interests of local people, but the interests of those purely seeking to profit from new developments. The voice of Bicester residents needs to be heard loud and clear in decision making at all-levels of Government, particularly by the town and district councillors that are tasked with representing them. Decisions taken by the district council recently seem to have been decided by party politics rather than what makes the greatest positive difference to local people’s lives. ...

In the run-up to Christmas it is easy to forget those in our own communities who are less fortunate than ourselves, people who cannot afford to buy the essentials and struggle to make ends meet. Many of these people are working incredibly hard for very little. Charities do fantastic work to attempt to mitigate the effects of low-pay, spiraling rents and a shrinking of the welfare state. However it cannot be left to volunteers to pick up the pieces of failed Government policy. Citizen's Income: A progressive approach to welfare Universal Basic Income (or Citizen's Income, CI) is a policy that has long been championed by the Greens. It allows for a society beyond the complex benefits system of today. Under CI, every citizen over the age of 18 is provided with an unconditional basic payment (£80 pw proposed by the Green Party). I joined the Green Party in April 2015 as a member of the Young Greens and since then have become an active member of the North Oxfordshire Green Party. It’s really enjoyable to take part in discussion and debate within the party as well as talking to voters in Cherwell and discussing the issues that matter to them. Why I got involved in politics Whilst watching the TV debates and attending a local hustings event in the run-up to the 2015 General election, I had the overwhelming feeling that mainstream politicians were not addressing the issues that mattered to people in a practical way, particularly the young.  I got involved in politics through a desire to change people's lives for the better, to help people who are struggling at the hands of crippling Government spending cuts and Government policy and to attempt to take responsibility for the way in which we are treating the Earth.
